WHO IS DOUG WELLER INSIDE WIKIPEDIA?

This month of June I am going to write in detail about a controversial admin of the English Wikipedia, nicknamed Doug Weller and his group. His full name is Douglas Weller and was born in Miami (USA) 75 years ago. He lives as a retired person in Derbyshire (Great Britain) with his wife Helen and some dogs (no irony about his name "doug" being similar to "dog", of course). I am not going to write about his sexual orientation, because I respect everybody; but he has been harshly attacked by some persons like Matthew Hopkins (read details in http://matthewhopkinsnews.com/?p=1736 ).

Hopkins wrote on his article titled "Paedophiles of Wikipedia" that admin Doug Weller -who is an 'Arbitration Committee member' of Wikipedia- "...should resign or be dismissed from ArbCom immediately. As for Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, he needs to immediately and permanently Block Doug Weller...." One of my friends (Vito G.) thinks that Doug Weller is a "bully who believes the rules don't apply to him and he is always right" (a problem with many admins and arbs in general on Wikipedia).

Additionally Marinka van Dam wrote that "......Doug Weller self-identifies on his user page only to the extent that he is an academic. His field would appear to be "Archaeology," though attempts to identify him from Google searches are inconclusive. A reasonable view would be that his claim to be an academic is authentic only to the extent that he holds a degree...Doug Weller has been outed by Examiner.com  (archived) as falsely representing his expertise. He was defended in a blog by Jose Colavito. The matter was aired in a Wikipediocracy thread, eventually locked by a moderator. We don't believe Doug Weller significantly misrepresents his expertise, though as noted above his claim to be an academic appears to be a bit of a stretch. There is, however, a very hostile page about him at RationalWiki.....We believe the Wikipedia accounts Randy from Boise and Xanthomelanoussprog, both of which have trolled our editors, are socks of Doug Weller. We believe the moniker "Xanthomelanoussprog" is a jocular reference to Doug's sandy hair and florid complexion, as can be seen in the image he provides for his Academia.edu  account." (read more, with his photo at http://marinkavandam.com/doug-weller.html )....."

Of course I have to admit that Doug Weller has been defending serious archaeology from many attacks (sometimes ridiculous), since the early 2000s at least: he has done a nice list of links at http://www.ramtops.co.uk/ , even if a bit incomplete.

Anyway sometimes he falls in the ridiculous (for an academic from Yale, as he proudly states of himself: but he did only some courses!) like here in http://www.atlantisquest.com/Sifrala.html#back1 : ..."Doug Weller, an editor on the Wikipedia staff, has made the totally unsupported statement that Mr. David Hatcher Childress (a proponent of ancient aircraft ) invented the Safr'ala, which would be quite an accomplishment, as Mr. Hatcher was born in 1957! He couldn't have been more than two years old when Dr. Ibn A'haron's translation of the Sifr'ala first appeared in print...."

In a few words Douglas Weller has also been defined as "....an old, creaky, unrepentant Wikipedia administrator/crapmonkey from the UK. He's mainly interested in archaeology and anthropology.... He's been trolling Usenet on the subject for more than 20 years, and left a trail of ruined careers and furious "actual experts" in his wake. (He claims he "dropped out of Yale" as if we were supposed to give him extra credit for failing.) On his user page, Doug tells us "he's number #190 in the list of most active wikipedians". Doug's flaws don't stop there - he's also a bitter old Lefty. Doug doesn't particularly like his own country or culture, and he uses wikipedia to express that attitude......" And -sincerely- this anti-American behavior could be defined as "Treason" by a US patriot!

Of course, Weller's authority at debunking "fringe archaeology" and other topics arises from his position as administrator and arbitrator at Wikipedia, where he has the power to wipe out whatever he disbelieves. And this aggressive "cancellation" is what happened to me when I wrote something about the possibility that the ancient Romans could have reached the Caribbean islands.

First of all I want to repeat and pinpoint in detail what has happened to  me (nicknamed initially "Brunodam" since 2005) in Wikipedia when I was banned forever in 2007 in a shameful way:

".....Two relatives/friends from Italy came to spend a summer in 2007 at Brunodam's house in south Florida. They spent some months posting with him on Salerno topics on the Italian Wikipedia from his home (using his same modem, of course). An Italian wiki admin did not believe that they were 3 different persons and blocked them: they offered to send copies of their passports & identifications and to talk by phone to show that they were not the same persons, but he kept blocking them. Brunodam then got enraged and "hinted" (and it is noteworthy to pinpoint that he only HINTED the possibility) that he was thinking of getting help from an attorney in order to defend himself from these offensive accusations.......and suddenly he got BANNED FOREVER! No possibility of defending himself, and the same happened for his 2 relatives who got astonished by all this excessive punishment! Brunodam quickly wrote to the "bad & angry" Italian admin Trixt  (decorated with the "evil" barnstar!  https://it.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Utente:Trixt&diff=12537949&oldid=12410290 ), who banned him forever (https://it.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Discussioni_utente:Trixt&diff=next&oldid=7606637 ). He explained that he only hinted a selfdefense and did not want to menace a legal suit against the Italian wikipedia, and some time later he also wrote to Jimbo - the wiki founder ( https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Brunodam&oldid=503819408 ) - when he was banned even in the English wikipedia for the same reason.  But he got always blocked and blocked and blocked and blocked every tentative of communication and possible solution....Since then Brunodam -enraged by this complete lack of justice with him- started to write more and more on many wikipedias, as a reaction....."

Indeed I have written more than 130000 user contributions using many nicknames, but I have never "sabotaged" Wikipedia: all my writings were done in order to improve Wikipedia, mainly with articles related to Italy and to the fathers of the Italians, the old Romans. Last but not least it is noteworthy to pinpoint that I am graduated 'summa cum laude' from the Genova university (in northern Italy) and I have a MBA from a Los Angeles university (in California, USA): this fact means that I have plenty of knowledge about how to write articles with professionality (indeed I also published some works, edited by the Genova university).

Now let me explain all the astonishing mess around a few paragraphs I have added with my nicknames to an article called "Pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact theories" (before reappeared steward Vituzzu, a Mafioso I have already denounced last February 2017 http://mynewbestarticles.blogspot.com/2017/02/many-critics-to-steward-vituzzu.html  and in urgent need of psychiatric therapy according to a professor of the 'University Cattaneo'  http://mynewbestarticles.blogspot.com/2017/02/vito-cricca.html ):

All started because I added on may 25, 2017 this small excerpt quickly deleted by "Iamalwaysright" Doug Weller.

"....Furthermore, in a Pompeii mural is seen a pineapple (an american fruit) and even in the mosaic of the "Palazzo Massimo alle Terme" of Rome, a pineapple is visible [89] These mosaics are considered proof of transatlantic commerce by some experts, like pomologist Domenico Casella[90] Critics complain that the Pompeii "pineapple" is likely to be a pine cone, but the shape seems to confirm to be an american fruit.....Additionally other "pineapples" have been found, like the one in a Swiss museum  [89]......"

And this is the photo -taken in a swiss museum- of a small statue of a roman boy with an ananas in his left hand: Doug Weller (and his group) seems to "hate" it because it is another proof that Ancient Romans had pineapples, an American fruit that was believed to have been brought to Europe from America only after Columbus discovery:

Now I want to make a few considerations about this image:
1) Romans were very realistic while pragmatically making their statues. So, they used to represent only something really important: why the statue should show a simple and very common pine cone? Nobody in Rome would appreciate this pine cone, of course! But an exotic fruit from distant shores would be proudly shown by a roman boy in a roman statue, don't you agree?
2) The roman boy in his right hand has something that looks like a dish (or a cover of a dish). May be he was a young servant bringing the pineapple to be eaten?
3) The pineapple looks very similar to a Puerto Rican pineapple called "Red Spanish". See image at the bottom of the article. To the reader the final judgement!

Finally, I want to add something I wrote in the discussion page of the wiki Noteboard and partially erased by Doug Weller (because evidently he cannot accept that he is wrong sometimes):

A)...."....Sincerely I only added some information about "another pineapple". I don't want to promote any "fringe theory"! I think that Elio Cadelo is a famous journalist in Italy (of the RAI, the official Italian Radio-TV institution: he is "Scrittore, Caporedattore giornale radio Rai per la scienza e l'ambiente") who is well accepted & judged in historian circles of Italy. So, for me he is a "Reliable source for claims of other pineapples: Elio Cadelo has won the Premio ENEA 1999 (please read https://www.ibs.it/libri/autori/Elio%20Cadelo", as I wrote). Here it is a video where Cadelo comments his book about the Romans in America in the "Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici e Geografici": [13]. It is in Italian, but I can give a translation if requested. Anyway, I just wanted to add this information...and nothing else....(but allow me to add that the pineapple shown in the hands of the roman kid inside the Geneva museum (see http://www.lsdmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/resizephp.jpg and that was quickly made disappear by Doug Weller) has no round "grapes" near his hand like the wine-grape fruit, but "rectangular pieces" that looks astonishingly similar to this photo of an
ananas:https://avatanplus.com/files/resources/mid/573ecbf4cac11154cd4cb45e.png Pineapple in hand.jpg). And we know that ananas is a fruit that can survive many weeks of travel, with only the loss of the green leaves....So, I think this Wikipedia article must add evidences like these pineapples and not only evidences about "Claims involving California canoes" & "Claims involving chickens". Regards to all of you...."

B)...."...So, in your opinion what is in the hands of the roman kid? At this point I like to leave all this mess. All this attacks -that is what I feel, sincerely- are on a simple refusal to allow that something roman can have reached America, but if it is Phoenician or Chinese or Polynesian....well that's acceptable. This reminds me the discussion (on academic circles, of course) about the latin word "perdomita", related to the fact that Britain -according to Tacitus who wrote "Britannia perdomita, sed olim missa est" (Britain was totally conquered but quickly was lost)- was fully conquered by the roman Agricola. As you probably know the british circles of historians linked to the "glory" of the British empire cannot accept that the word perdomita is made in latin from the words "PERfecta DOMInaTA" (meaning 'completely dominated' in classical latin) and so they deny the total conquest of Britain by Agricola. So, as written before, I like to leave all this mess & these attacks: I semi-retire from Wikipedia...."

C)...."...So some users and admin Doug Weller have obtained to impose what they wanted. Congratulations....But at the end nobody has answered my question: in your opinion what is in the hands of the roman kid in the Geneva museum?......obviously it can be ONLY an ananas from America! My last four cents with the same words of Galileo to the abuses of the Inquisition: EPPUR SI MUOVE....and at the end all of us admit that he was right!. So, in a similar way I am sure soon or later the truth about these pineapples in roman hands will come out.."

D)...."... I am totally sure it is an ananas, because of the pineapple rectangular pieces near the kid hand that cannot be dimples grapes but only pieces of leaves in the first stages of decomposition (probably this fruit was many weeks old). Here it is an image that shows the leaves falling: the first line of leaves covers the top of the ananas "dimples" ([17]). I also remember the ananas of the Geneva museum was very similar to those imported from Puerto Rico: it is a species of pineapple imported in Switzerland.

As we know Christopher Columbus introduced pineapples to Europe when he brought one as a gift to Spain's Queen Isabella from the island of Guadeloupe in 1493. The Spanish, who were greatly intrigued by the exotic appearance of pineapples, first named it “Pine of the Indies” because of its resemblance to a pine cone. The "ananas comosus" is the scientific name of this tropical fruit, and the most famous species in Europe is the one imported from the Caribbean: the "Red Spanish" (like the one shown at the bottom of this article, and that is very similar to the one in the Swiss Musem). But admin Doug Weller may also deny all these facts, who knows?

Another thing that strikes me it is that this 'Iamalwaysright' Doug Weller works in the article called "Pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact theories" in complete symbiosis with a group of wikipedians (like the "human rat" nicknamed User:MjolnirPants and others like User:Agricolae, User:Gamall Wednesday Ida and partially even  User:Slatersteven) . Of course, we all know that this in Wikipedia is called MEAT PUPPETRY! Indeed the Wikipedia rules are that  "additional users who engage in the same behavior as an user in the same context, and who appear to be editing a Wikipedia article solely for the purpose of promoting the cause of this user, are doing something ILLEGAL that has the name "Meat puppetry" (and they can also be accused of doing "Canvassing") ". But Doug Weller seems enraged only if somebody like me- forced to use many nicknames since 2007, because of the lack of justice that I have shown above- does the so called sock puppetry.

Evidently the wiki rules apply for others (who do sock puppetry as the only way to defend themselves inside wikipedia) but not for him (who does meat puppetry in a shamelessly way).....Honestly, this is a strange kind of interpretation of the justice, typical of some wiki admins with their abuses!!!

  2. What a shame that people write lies about me. I have degrees and postgraduate qualifications from Yale, the London School of Economics and the University of London (and a bit more) and was an academic. https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/schools/social-policy/departments/health-services-management-centre/events/fortieth-celebrations/gale-sewell-sue.aspx
I'm a patriotic American with ancestors going back to the Mayflower. That's a weird comment about my sexuality by the way since the link doesn't say anything about it, but hey, it mentions paedopohilia, a little bit of tar can go a long way.

  3. Forgot. I guess I need to say I've never had a sockpuppet, not even a legitimate alternative account. As for meat puppetry, there are a lot of mainstream editors that work on fringe articles and it's not surprising that they all have the same point of view. That's the way we work.

  4. Nevertheless Doug Weller, you are a crank, and a liar -- withholding and hiding the truth is just as much of a lie as telling false stories).

Someday soon, Wikipedia is going to be replaced with an honest system. One where the likes of you, when you get caught with your shenanigans, get the immediate boot, and permabanned. And people will trust it, and shun your little website of lies -- precisely because of people like YOU

    ReplyDelete
  5. And there won't be a single thing you can do about it -- because the ONLY editing you will be allowed to get away with is that which is truthful. Removing truthful information (which seems to be one of your favorite pasttimes) is grounds for instant permaban.

Enjoy your last years being permanently relegated to the outside, looking in, of the most important web encyclopedia (which already is NOT Wikipedia).

  7. He certainly is a phony ... But I have faith that it will all come back to him eventually: In God I Trust. Having made many improvements to Wiki pages myself, my research is thorough and accurate. He recently tossed one of my articles into the irretrievable 'Delete' forum and summarily dismissed it as 'terribly sourced' when it was, in fact, one of the best-sourced articles in the Wiki database. I very strong bias could be detected in his very vague comments: other adjudicators who 'chimed in' used extremely juvenile and accusatory language (very arrogant and condescending, like the kids had been set to manage the 'Mom and Pop' store while the folks were away) -- completely inappropriate for an online entity that should be doing all it can to improve its horrendous online 'infosource' reputation. When asked for specific examples, as I was absolutely confident in every last bit of documented work, he only offered general 'ill-sourced' comments and never once provided an example, because he couldn't. I knew he couldn't. He is indeed a disgrace to Wikipedia, which, sadly, as far as accurate information goes (an estimated 90% of their pages are comprised of gross misinformation: see the video below), is a disgrace to begin with. RE: https://youtu.be/-bYAQ-ZZtEU (NOTE especially the min segment 3:57-5:50 into the video). WIKI really cannot afford to alienate excellent researchers and writers; they've forever lost one here. The 'powers that be' at Wikipedia really need to wake up and do background checks on their arbitration admins, because every comment was categorically false that Weller made in the arbitration record (of which, by the way, I did an HTML 'capture' on before he or some other culprit deleted comments made in that record (which 'erasing' of one's tracks is itself condemning), and which I'm forwarding on to many of the online research consulting agencies, such as gave the presentation in the above link). His comments were complete falsehoods, for any one of my references could have been checked for utter accuracy. It's a sad situation that people have not caught on to him and are being 'duped' and made out to be fools.

His claim to fame is that he (fashionably) "dropped out of Harvard". I don't think he ever went to any college at all, let alone Harvard.

His criticisms are of the wine and cheese tasting variety. I think that he thinks that this is how academics talk.

Doug Weller started as a censor at Sci.Archaeology.Moderated, one of the old newsgroups of Usenet/Newsnet. Back in the day when Dejanews still existed and hadn't been taken over/ruined by Google. 20 years on, and we still don't have threaded news. Anyway...

He couldn't source anything if the tried to. He makes thousands of deletions to Wikipedia - what article has he written on there? When was the last time he actually added information to it, instead of censoring what others say?

Did he have a better source? No.

Even some other mods comment on his rants with "I'm not touching the race stuff with a ten foot pole."

      Doug Weller is from Florida.

"When asked for specific examples, as I was absolutely confident in every last bit of documented work, he only offered general 'ill-sourced' comments and never once provided an example, because he couldn't."

He just censors what he doesn't like. And then makes up lots of excuses afterwards. SYNTH. NPOV. Examples, explanation of the rule he just relied on - never.

I have a long thread here on Doug Weller and Wikipedia:

    https://twitter.com/MrK00001/status/1101458003792928768

Everipedia: "As of 2016, Weller had made over 150,000 edits to Wikipedia. [8]"

Clearly he is making far more edits than his expertise such as it is could possibly justify. And why is he even an arbcom admin? Why no sound from Jimmy Wales?

  11. If anyone encounters these Wikipedia weasels, use this page to counter them. The likes of Doug Weller are completely bereft of any kind of originality at all - so it is no surprise that their tactics have been documented. Their attacks are completely predictable, and consist of bad faith assertions of: NPOV, NOR, DE (Disruptive Editing) and a few more.

Their strategy even has a name: Status Quo Stone Walling.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Status_quo_stonewalling#Status_quo_stonewalling_tactics

    - Accusing change proponents of disruptive, tendentious, or TLDR editing
    - Edit war lockdown
    - Manipulating an admin into helping
    - Unreasonable sourcing demands

    More:

    - Avoiding substantive discussion because of who is involved
    - Reverting or opposing on procedural grounds
    - Defending a revert because it's related to an ongoing dispute
    - Defending a revert because the related text is mentioned in an open case
    - A !vote of "no change needed", See also: Wikipedia: I just don't like it
    - Arguing the status quo "does no harm"
    - Ignoring good faith questions
    - Arguing a policy or guideline needs to change first when opposing a proposal that is based on ignoring that policy/guideline per IAR
    - Opposing a proposal based only on asserting that it's not supported by consensus
    - Drive-by long-distance reverts
    - Imposing a moratorium on proposals for change

  13. Grandmaster Weller joined a flurry of stone-throwers hell-bent on excising my discovery of the origin of the concept of God from the pages of Wikipedia:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=God&oldid=1067529020.

Such a shame, for my discovery places religion in the clear light of day, giving bigots one less thing to fight over.

And how ironic that Weller claims to know something about archeology, when it is prehistoric archeological evidence that is the very basis of my discovery that the very first God that mankind invented was the Moon, which ancient hunter-gatherers 37,000 years ago and much less ancient Egyptians 5000 years ago "deduced" was the source of human fertility, from the coincidence of the lengths of the lunar cycle and the human menstrual cycle.

That "deduction" is also the reason there are 7 days in a week and 12 months in a year (because we have 4 fingers; it's all to to with the Egyptian cubit) - fascinating stuff that explains so much!

No doubt the archive will soon be expunged too, but my source should still be viewable at:

  15. I am crying tears of joy to have stumbled on this page! Many years ago I was the co-creator and main contributer to a Wiki page- writing about a famous tomb in a famous place where I'd lived for 5 years (India). Then somehow the page attracted Doug Weller. He began changing and/or deleting my contributions, defending himself with statements such as "self-published author", conflicts of interest, not peer reviewed, then after removing my refernces he started inserting his own...who were predominantly Christians with views strongly opposing mine..they were debunking anything I tried to say about the tomb, even removing mention of artifacts relevent to tomb hisory...Can you imagine an article about the Shroud of Turin without the Shroud? That's what happened to me. And finally we got the accusations of my 'sock puppets' which led to total bans by Doug Weller. I brag that I am accused of being over 25 sock puppets- probably a Wikipedia record!! I am going on with my research-without Doug or Wikipedia..I have high hopes for a breakthrough soon- relating to some new DNA tests...I have to go on with this. This Project is my passion in life. I am saddened that people like Doug Weller thrive on slowing things down.....Sense of power? Different religious beliefs? a kook? I even wondered if he had a crush on me at one time...because he seemed always to be following me and harrassing me through his "editing "my posts..much of it uncalled for....but of course he always included his "reasoning"..... I suspect he also used aliases. I feel deeply saddened to know I am not the only one he's done this to.......he should leave Wikipedia..actions like this give the place a bad name.He has revealed too many biases to ever be a good editor there..So sad. email me at (if you want to-but that's not necessary): farawaysue@yahoo.com

  17. Hello Doug, I am surprised at this response becauase I completely believe everything that I posted about me...My ultimate frustration level was reached when making other edits about other topics on Wiki, only to have those deleted on one or another false charge..My bbiggest hope and dream is to know the DNA reults of the two men interred in Roza Bal tomb. I believe the results will be world-changing. As soon as my own health stabilizes, I hope to return to National Geo. and get funding to continue...the Imams at Roza Bal want me to pay for everything, from digging up and restoring the graves (has to be done by professional archaeologists) to the science and tests- which can cost well over $50,000. each..Yes, what happened to me at Wiki did/does feel like harrassment! Plus it hurts my chances to proceed withthe DNA/Roza Bal project. It has been a hard blow to take. As a graduate of NYU, I can say that I only visited Yale and Harvard for proms..Me? lack of Integrity? That's what I thought YOU lacked! I apologize here, publicly for any errors or false assumptions that I made about you..but I stand firm by all the sock puppets associated with me...I will probably come up with a few more new names as time goes by! Sad that I didn't break the records. I tried! Liver? That nasty organ that is also doing me in? No. I dont rejoice over the suffering of you, nor anyone else.. we only get this one shot at viewing life on earth...Whatever impressions, love or hate we die with has to last us an eternity..once we die, we lose the erasers on our pencils....so make good memories. Also, after living in Central Asia for about 10 years, I saw a lot of horrors done in the name of religion...If I had to declare myself a religion, I could not..I have absorbed some Christianity, some Judaism, some Buddhism (lived almost 3 years in Thailand..there is a Buddhist/Hebrew temple at the end of KaoSan Road).I find it so sad what mankind does 'in the name of God'. :-( Recently I was reading books by physicists, trying to understand it all..Stephen Hawkings believes that great things are possible with the human mind while we live, but once we die, and the biologics cease functioning, then there is nothing left to norish the atoms and create mind things like gods and magic...I find the idea intriguing, but I am reluctant to give up all belief in magic and life after death....I too am facing my end of days so these ideas are important for me to understand..

    PAGUS AUGUSTUS

The Romans conquered Phoenicia in 64 BC with Pompeius. They enlarged their control on all the eastern shores of the Mediterranean sea and started to call this sea with the name "Mare Nostrum" (Our Sea), because from Gibraltar to Phoenicia-Palestine all these areas a few years later were inside of the "Roman Empire" created by Augustus.

Map showing the territory of Roman Berytus (the Phoenicia's area most Latinised) under emperor Claudius. The red points (with latin inscriptions) are the places -very probably- populated by Roman colonists in the Beqaa valley (image from commons)

According to Benjamin Isaac of the Tel Aviv university, the colonies of the Roman Empire in the Middle East were genuine "veteran colonies" (Berytus/Beirut -which presumably at first included Heliopolis and vicinity, Acco/Ptolemais, and Aelia Capitolina/Jerusalem), but there also were "titular colonies", the most important of which are Caesarea-on-the-Sea, Bostra, and Gerasa. Veteran colonies were reorganized at the time of the foundation, and veterans from the Roman legions were settled there and received land. They formed a local elite imposed upon the existing communities. By contrast, the titular colonies were established through political reorganization and a change in status, unaccompanied by the settlement of veterans.

It is noteworhty that under Augustus the Romans started a tentative of "romanization" (mainly cultural) -with roman veterans as colonists- in areas of central Phoenicia.

They imposed -in the first century and half of the Roman Empire- the use of their latin language and pagan religion mainly in Berytus (actual Beirut) with the settlement of two legion's veterans and additionally in the nearby Beqaa valley with farm colonists & also with the creation of the huge pagan temples of Heliopolis (actual Baalbeck).

The Romans used to "consolidate" their conquered territories in the Mediterranean area with settlers (mainly from central Italy during the existence of the Roman Republic, but also from all the Italian peninsula during the Roman Empire) in strategical places and for this reason created "colonies" in what is now central Lebanon.

  22. What is wrong with the above essay (it is only a section of the original published on "Academia", however)? Only the "strange" mind of Doug can give a negative answer......

  23. Hello, Addo, this is Roy Waidler. I was a friend of Suzanne Olsson's. I regret to say that this courageous woman passed away in June of this year. I had been working on an interview with her for roughly four years. One of her challenges, as you're aware, came from Wikipedia. I entered this thread earlier this year. I would like your permission to quote from your blog to complete the interview. I am working with her daughter; her stake is that she wants to see her mother's work get a wider audience. Should you give me the go-ahead, I'll keep you updated - but I work slow!

  27. This is tiring and silly, I have no socks. Or it's part of a whole plot by the Wikimedia Foundation to allow one of their most trusted Admins to break all the rules. I've been granted more sysop powers than almost all of the other Admins. I loathe sockpuppetry. But the good news for you guys is that I might not be around much longer. Slowly recovering from my second round of cancer surgery. First bowel cancer, then chemo, then very serious liver surgery where they had to take out a lot more than they'd expected. Great for you all, right? Or maybe sad that you might not have me much longer to abuse.

  28. Yes, here's a quote from my Wikipedia talk page about my cancer: Doug, I waited way too long to finish writing this. You were one of the first admins I ever ran into on here, and an absolute paragon of what an admin should be. How much you care about this site and the time you've spent on it, has been an absolute blessing. And nothing can ever take that away from you. I am so honored to have been able to see you do that work, and hope many of us around here are able to take it forward. When I see a page that you were "watching over" (e.g. the only person (or one of few) responding to POV edit requests, keeping the article in good condition, etc.) I've been adding it to my watchlist. I hope others will do the same. I'm also so blown away by the poise and grace you're showing here, and in this announcement. Nothing about this is easy, I cannot even imagine how hard it is to think about or to write. And I just hope I can even approach that level of peace or grace if I get this sort of news. Thank you for everything you do around here, and thank you for continuing to be just an all around good guy.
There are a lot more. My legacy isn't going to be the attacks on me but the tremendous support I'm getting on Wikipedia.

    3. Thank you, this is much appreciated. Sadly I am definitely going to die from cancer, hopefully not until late next year. Ironically the only physical problem I have is my Parkinson's which is steadily making it harder to walk. But I'm persevering with my treadmill!
